Tear Me Down Like Roger Moore

I have to run to a meeting, but this just caught my eye.

I love (LOVE!) Amy Winehouse. She blows me away. I know, if you don’t get her, you just don’t get her, and I’m certainly not condoning her trainwreck lifestyle. But I’ve said since the first time I ever heard her voice, that she reminds me of exactly what Nina Simone would be, if her heyday was today, instead of the 60s. She has the same roughness and scalding anger, and the level of crazy vocal talent — and they have such similar voices.

Anyway, I hope she gets the 007 theme, because I think she fits the new Bond. And I hope it somehow helps her troubled life.

In a surreal way…

I was listening to Leonard Cohen on the iTrip on the way to work today, and it reminded me of an article I read a few weeks ago, saying that Prince Charles - who is my mother’s age - is a big Cohen fan.

At the time, I wondered if he meant George Cohan and the reporter had just typed it wrong, but something about “gravel voiced” and “Canadian” came into the conversation, and cleared that up. I’ve never a big fan of Prince Charles, but I have to admit, I find the idea of his highness lounging in the back of the Bentley, iPod headphones on, humming along with “Give me crack / anal sex / Take the only tree that’s left / and stuff it up the hole in your culture,” to be practically endearing.

iTrip

The Good: I’ve been using Crest Whitestrips, which have the phrase “In just seven days” on the lid. So I spend every morning singing “In just seven days (And seven nights!!) I can make you a fa-a-a-a-a-ag. Just! Like! Your! Dad!” until iTrip saves me.

The Weird: That little tune they play on the Six Flags commercials? With the dancing old guy in front of the bus? That’s a real song. (I heard it this morning)

The Ugly: You know the last song you hear will get stuck in your head all day. Sadly, today I misjudged how much time I had before the parking lot and didn’t skip past “I Am I Said.” The fatal flaw of the iPod is that you keep kitschy songs on there, because you can, which causes just this problem. (”LA’s fine, but it ain’t home. New York’s home but it ain’t mine, no more.” Share my pain.)

Falling Mercury

Eerie?

Did you, or your parents, listen to Gordon Lightfoot?

Do you, or your kids, listen to Alexi Murdoch?

Does anyone else hear what I’m hearing? Have you ever seen them together?

Wicked cool. So to speak.

A guy on my team just walked over to tell me that he figured out an email I sent him - and he mentioned he was going to see Wicked. I said “In Chicago?” and he said no, it’s playing here. Predictably, I freaked, and he said it’s playing at the Fox, and he’d send me the link for pre-sale tickets.

And he did, and I got a front row seat. Ok, it’s not in the pit, but those were already sold out. But it’s first row orchestra, on the left. I didn’t dare rely on finding anyone to go with me, when the tickets were $80, so I only bought one. It’s a matinee show, so I don’t mind going alone. Just yesterday, I was thinking I’d jump on the train and run up to see it in Chicago. And now I don’t have to.

Wicked! I’m so excited. :o)

Sunday Tunes

When I was in high school… Wait. Ok, see, my whole life I’ve dated assholes. I’ve only ever dated two nice guys, which is why I don’t date anymore. Anyway, when I was in 10th grade, I dated this boy named Peter Schilling. The nicest boy I ever dated. My mom still talks about him. And when I moved away, he gave me this song on a twelve inch. Not this version. But this song. This beautiful song.
