Israel Finally Hits Back

Beware the fury of the patient man.

[Ehud] Barak says Israel does not intend to allow Islamic Hamas militants who rule Gaza to continue firing rockets and mortars on Israel’s southern communities.

Barak says there is a time for calm and a time for fighting. Speaking at a news conference Saturday, he said “now is the time for fighting” and that “the operation will expand as necessary.”

Israeli warplanes retaliating for rocket fire from the Gaza Strip pounded dozens of security compounds across the Hamas-ruled territory in unprecedented waves of airstrikes Saturday, killing at least 155 and wounding more than 310 in the single bloodiest day of fighting in recent memory.

About. Damn. Time.

War and killing is all these monsters understand, dropping their cowardly rockets on civilian areas in Israel during peace time, and then crying about not having their own homeland. A new generation of “Palestinians” needs to learn that Israel happens to be better at war than they are, and provoking them is a grave mistake. (Er, no pun intended.)

Finish it this time, please, dears. No matter what the UN says.

(I’ll be interested to see how Obama — and specifically Rahm Emanuel — feel about this. For all his many liberal views, Emanuel is notorious for being extremely pro-Israel.)

“War and killing is all these monsters understand”

Yup. Some people only understand force and the threat of force, and “diplomacy” will only embolden them.

I’ve always wondered about folks who complain of Israels lack of restraint. They’re dealing with people who want to wipe them off the face of the earth. How else can you effectively respond to such people other than by force?

I get the feeling that Israel is doing this because they know as of late January they will be forced to the bargaining table to give up more to monsters. Like eating that last big spoonful of ice cream before the parents get home and put the padlock on the freezer.

I hope I’m wrong. Rahm’s personal ambitions will surely outweigh any allegiance he has to Israel, I believe.

I hope they tell the U.N. to pee up a rope and not stop until they get Pvt. Shalot (?) back.
That would be a good start, or ending if Og is right.

“Finish it this time, please, dears. No matter what the UN says.”

Hell, go one better and go after the U.N. next for barring Israel from joining the Security Council.

The ideal approach is, as always:
    1) define your objective clearly
    2) pursue your objective ruthlessly and effectively
    3) never give up

They’ve said the objective is to stop the missile fire. I’m not sure if it’s Olmert, Livni, or Barak who’s actually in charge. The objective may be changing/evolving, which makes me nervous. This crew failed to execute in 2006, I’m hoping they’ve learned their lessons.

As of now, I can’t see how this ends well. Which is not to say that it didn’t have to be done.

Go IDF! You do the whole world a favor!

I dunno. I’m a strong supporter of Israel. I’ve got family there. I think they’ve got every right to defend themselves. And the claims that Israel should show restraint because Hamas hadn’t succeeded (despite many attempts!) in killing Israelis recently drives me up a wall. It’s so wrong on so many levels.

But still. “Finish it”? Finish what? How? Finish Hamas? Would that they could, but that’s impossible. Certainly not via air strikes. Finish the threat to Israeli towns near Gaza? They can make the rocket and mortar fire stop for a few days. Perhaps a week. Maybe even a month. But then it’ll start up again.

This feels more like a play for Israeli politics (election coming up, y’know) than a step that can provide any real security. I pray that I’ll be proven wrong.

Israel managed to (stupidly) get all of the Jews out of Gaza in 2005 without killing them. I’m sure they could manage to remove the Palestinians just as easily if they put their minds to it.

I agree that it’s a political play, but who cares, if it works?

  • By Jon, January 2, 2009 @ 10:52 am

Are you serious, or making a joke? In 2005, Israel removed a few hundred Israeli citizens from Gaza. They were resettled in Israel.

There are well over a *million* Palestinians in Gaza, they’re somewhere between indifferent and actively hostile towards Israel, and forcibly removing them to settle them in Israel would be suicidally stupid.

Do you really think they could “manage to remove” the Palestinians from Gaza if only they “put their minds to it”? Do you really believe this situation has dragged on for decades only because Israelis are too lazy or scatterbrained to work on a solution?

Forgive me if I sound hostile. That’s not my intent. But I find what you’re saying incomprehensible. I must be misunderstanding what you mean.

  • By Tanya, January 2, 2009 @ 11:11 am

Are you kidding me? Israel has an Army. The Palestinians, for all their numbers, are just individuals, however hostile they may be. When Israel gets finished bombing the shit out of them (which will be months from now, if I get a vote), or the people denounce and evict Hamas to save their own skins, they’ll be happy to move out of Gaza. As fast as their little terrorist legs will carry them. To Egypt or Syria or Lebanon or Iran or wherever. Not to Israel.

Suggesting that these monsters be moved to Israel is the dumbest thing you’ve said yet, and you’ve said some pretty dumb things so far.

And yes, I do think that Israel’s been stupid for decades. Mindbogglingly stupid. You can’t appease terrorists with land, and it’s about damn time they learned that. The only thing that teaches a bully to stand down is kicking him in the balls. I’ll be happy to see these Palestinian assholes rolling on the ground, holding their crotches and moaning, for a few generations.
