*meaningful head tilt*

I actually found the region one DVD set gift to the British Prime Minister gaffe to be funny, if sad, and sort of telling. But this is just rude:

The [State Department] official dismissed any notion of the special relationship, saying: “There’s nothing special about Britain. You’re just the same as the other 190 countries in the world. You shouldn’t expect special treatment.”

To one of our closest allies? Who still has troops fighting alongside ours, in harm’s way? Really?

And wasn’t this the guy whose biggest campaign promise was that he’d make the rest of the world like us again?

We can do nothing about it, of course. But it made me think, does this deserve one of those magical “We’re Sorry” websites that the left loves so much? Thousands of people in photographs, holding handwritten signs that say “We’re sorry our President is a tactless clod, P.M. Brown. Better luck next administration! We U!”

Who’s with me?

Fair is fair. If GWB had said it I’d be mocking away. You just don’t say that to a visitor.

The tactlessness of the gift and follow-up respopnse aside, pretty much all DVD players you can buy these days can be reprogrammed to accept all region DVDs in about 10 seconds with a couple of presses of the remote control buttons. In fact, if the DVD didn’t come with the instructions on how to do this, a two minute call to the manufacturer’s toll free help line will get the problem solved for good.

I know this because we routinely bring back disks form the US as well as buy them here in Israel.

You can play many regions on a computer, too. I have a few English DVDs that I occasionally watch on my laptop. Would a PM really do either?

I have to admit I was impressed with the British gifts:
For his part, PM Brown gave two symbolic gifts and one that expressed national pride. Brown came bearing a pen holder carved from the timbers of the sister ship of that which gave the wood to create the famous “Resolute Desk,” the desk that has been in America’s charge since 1880. He also gave Obama the framed commission for that famous ship, the HMS Resolute. His third gift was a seven-volume biography of one of England’s greatest leaders, Winston Churchill.

Maybe a book gift related to William Wilburforce would have been more appropriate but the first two are extraordinary.
